What Octane rating should i use in my 86 celica GTS?
So i have an 86 GTS, and I'm about to hit 99k.
I've been putting premium mobil in it since i've had it, but i was curious if i could bump it down, (with raising gas prices and all) What does the user manual say to use? (mine didn't have one, and i just assumed premium/super is what i should go for, and it got rid of the ping it had when i got it. |

3SGE and 3SFE engines are both rated for 87 octane. Only the 3SGTE 'demands' 91 octane. Run some Sea Foam through the intake and toss some in the gas tank to clean your EFI system. You'll probably get the same mileage and power you do now spending an extra 20 cents/gal for premium.

Thanks for the response!
I went to premium to get rid of the ping and it did it, since then i bumped it down to 87 and it's been fine...i'm going to see if i get slightly better mileage with one of the other 2 tanks at a time, and see what is the most beneficial |

Re: What Octane rating should i use in my 86 celica GTS?
Are you also checking for the source of the ping? You're getting an improper burn for some reason and may be running too high cylinder compression due to carbon build-up, slightly off timing, or something else causing the A/F mixture to go a bit off. I'd still recommend an EFI system cleaning. Personally, I've only had consistently good, measurable results from Sea Foam and think most other off-the-shelf treatments junk. But to each their own. Sea Foam does a great job of burning the excess carbon, which in a 100k mile engine could be enough to add 5-10 psi compression more than is healthy for the longevity of the engine. Just a thought...

Okay, i'll definitely check the compression. It seems fine, based on engine braking results, but i'll give it a formal test, and clean it out some. (p.s. with the way i drive there's no way carbon can live in my cars =P)
