Look what I found in the engine I just Bought
I purchased an engine for my 86 Celica GTS (3SGE), supposed to be one of those Japanese engines with 40 to 60K miles. I decided to replace the front seal's, timing belt and water pump since it would be easy. While taking the water pump out I could not get that Phillips screw out and had to drill it out. When I got the water pump out I found this. Is it normal? Should I be worried? Should I continue or return the engine? I really wanted to get the car running this weekend, but now I don't know. Im leaning towards trying to return the engine, but I cleaned the mess the best I could already. So I dont know what they will say. I also installed the seal's, but they weren't that expensive. If you frequent Celicatech you may have seen it this already, I posted there last night.

First, you need a new water pump. Second your coolant passages in the engine may look like that also. You may need to take the engine apart and give it a hot bath before using it.

Re: Look what I found in the engine I just Bought
I have gone through 2 "low mile" JDM engines. Here's a link to a very interesting article about a high performance shop that's seen lots of JDM engines http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/Docum...20failures.pdf
If you decide to still go the JDM route, I recommend you strip it down and inspect most/all of it. Otherwise, you're spending time/$$ and may be pulling it again w/in a few months. At least pull the head while it's easily accessible, spend $35 to have it bench tested, visually inspect the cylinder walls, piston heads and rings, and install a new HG. A couple extra hours now could save you much more time/$$ down the road. |
