Thinking of buying an 87 GT-S, but have questions
My son is looking at buying a 1987 Celica GTS coupe. The body is very straight and the car runs well and pulls very hard at the top end. Not a bad car for its age.
My question is about the "new used" engine that was put in the car. Apparently, the owner prior to the one we are considering buying it from swapped the engine for a newer used engine. The engine, based on what I have seen in pictures of other Celica GT-S engine bays, looks like the stock setup, so I suspect it's a 3S-GE. The current owner doesn't know for sure what's in it because there was no paperwork for the swap when he bought the car three years ago, but he described it as a more powerful engine from an early 90's car. I suspect that this may be a JDM 3S-GE swap, but the car has a TVIS intake, which I understand from my limited knowledge of this model Celica, is not a typical Japanese market setup. The valve covers indicate that it's a 2.0 liter engine. Is there an easy way to tell what we've got in this car? Does my theory about the swap sound plausible?
We're thinking of buying the car tomorrow. Is there anything else we should look out for as we consider buying this car? Thanks for the help.
