Re: how much is this engine worth????
used - anywhere between $500 and $1200. Rebuilt, it's probably valued closer to $2,000+.
You should see upwards of 170 HP w/ the 2nd gen 3SGE. And you're right, there's no way to make it smog legal in CA. Conversion is not possible on the Gen 2 3SGE. You can match the block of the gen 2 w/ the head of the gen 1 and realize some HP gain from the higher compression bottom end, but the head of the gen 2 is where they really made the improvements. If you've got the time, space, and skill, just keep the 1st gen around and swap it in every two years for the smog inspection. |

Re: how much is this engine worth????
The head? Not here in CA. Don't know about the rest of the States, but since EGRs are Federal, I don't think you can get one street legal anywhere. There's just no way to rig the EGR. That's straight from several shops that sell them as well as everyone I know who's installed one. It's either in a non-inspected car (e.g., autocross), just the bottom end, or someone who doesn't mind the swap in/out every emission test cycle.
