1987 celica

my friend is looking at a 1987 celica gt, and it has about 200,000 miles on it, i was wondering if there is anything that he should look out for when he test drives this car. I know that the car has an exhaust leak but that shouldnt be too hard to fix. any help would be appreciated

Re: 1987 celica

listen real hard to ANY kind of noise internally in the motor. crank broke on mine during *normal* driving. found lots and lots of of metal filings in the oil pan too. oh yea, the cold start injector too, i had to hotwire mine to get it to work so i could start it when it was cold out.

Re: 1987 celica

Manual ST models may have a hard to engage fifth gear.

3SGE engines are prone to oil leaks from the rocker cover and can burn a bit of oil. A compression check is recommended as valves and rings can be worn by as little as 100,00km.

Look for rust. Pre-1988 models are more prone. The ventilation systems air inlet at the base of the windscreen can trap leaves and debris which can cause serious rust.
