Piston Sizes 3SGE '86 and '87

OK...so my rebuild is coming along slower then a slug orgy do to 2 donar crankshafts being crap. I've started rebuilding the lower end finally, new rings and bearing but I don't trust the #1 Piston...it seems the #1 compression ring is too tight and it looks kinda beaten on the piston skirt.

My Question: The engine I'm replacing is from an '86 GTS and has donatable pistons but the engine I'm rebuilding for the swap is from an 87. There are discrepencies everywhere I turn that these might have different guts. Haynes has different toque specs and clearances from 86 to 87 and toyota has them as differnent part numbers although he can't say if there interchangable or not!!! Are they different? Can I grab one of the pistons and throw it in? WIth no problems? Why all these changes for 1 year of production?

Cheers,
-Neal

i wouldnt trust that #1 if its tight the crank will bend uder soo much pressure, even downshifting to hard can bend the crank in these cars.

I am not going to use the piston, the question I need answered is if the pistons are interchangeable from production years 86 to 87. I have spare pistons from an 86 and the engine I'm building is a 87.

yes aslong as they are both 3sfe, they are exactly the same pistons in 1986 and 1987 therfore you can swap any of them.

They are both 3s-GE.....

look in a haynes and there are different torque specs, ring clearances etc. VERY small difference. Piston diameters are the same...

still swappable?

Never use an old ring.

?.....I must speak bad english....

of course I'm not using old rings...I've got and installed a brand new set of rings, but on one of the pistons the #1 compression ring was tight so I'm tossing that whole entire piston. I've got an '86 engine for parts and I've taken a piston out of it (it's in really good condition) and ALL I was wondering is if there is any concerns of using an 86 piston with an 87 engine. I only bring it up because there are so many different torque speqs and stuff in the haynes manual for 86 and then different for 87 and up....and Toyota has differenet part numbers for the 2 years...
