Re: losing oil!!!
Hey everyone, my first post here.
Anyway, what a crappy one it is. I've been looking for a 2000-2001 celica, and I've done a lot of research on them between the internet, my own experience in the auto shop I work at, and my colleagues.
Apparently, these earlier 7th gen engines just have a design flaw, plain and simple. There is a MASSIVE sludge build-up in the engines from oil that is burned within the engine, due to bad piston and valve seals, but probably the most overlooked reason of all is in the design of the engine itself. The oil galleys are simply in a bad place, and as such, cause a superheating of the oil, burning it in the engine and making massive amounts of sludge that will get everywhere inside the engine. This leads to a further breakdown of seals (and more), that will allow this crappy oil to go through the combustion chambers, where the highly-efficient cat. converters burn up most all of the oil in most cases. So you'll never have an inkling that there's a problem with your engine, until your oil light comes on while driving down the freeway, you get a knock, and the thing seizes and gives you one of many pleasant problems, such as a bent valve since it's an interference motor. Thank you Toyota, thank you for crapping on our faces.
There's a class-action lawsuit out there that led Toyota to replace any damage from this, as long as you could prove you gave your car an oil change at least once a year. Still unacceptable, but eh. I really wanted a Celica, but I guess I'll just go find a diesel VW or a civic. Gas mileage, AWAAAAY!
